About the Artist

I live in beautiful Sandpoint, Idaho, and started carving while a college student in Arcata, CA, over 40 years ago.  I carved my first sculpture, Startled Dear, after one of my friends, Lynn Fundingsland, an art major, loaned me a gouge and mallet.  I continued to carve when and where I could find the time.  I continued my education getting a B.A. in Psychology, Sociology, and History at Calif. State Univ., Arcata.  I continued at the Univ. of Oregon, Eugene majoring in Secondary Education and Special Education.  I also studied electricity and received an F.C.C. General Radio Telephone Operator and National Assoiciation of Business and Educational Radio license.

For many years, after getting married and becoming a father, I found it impossible to find the time to carve. During this period I was a K-12 Special Education teacher, teaching in schools throughout N. Idaho, from Priest River Jr. & Sr. High School to the West, Rocky Mtn. Academy in Bonners Ferry to the North, Clark Fork High & Hope Elementary to the East, and Post Falls High and the High School at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene to the South.  I had a wonderful teaching career and the pleasure of working with many talented people, including students, staff and community members.

I often augmented my teacher salary by taking other jobs that primarily were in the lumber mills. My first mill job was 'clean up' at Merritt's in Priest River.  I went on to perform many jobs for Louisiana Pacific at Chilco and Sandpoint.  I've also worked as an electronics technician, pot-line worker (aluminum), and in retail.

During all of this time, wood sculpture has been my avocation.  I take the time to make wood chips and sawdust whenever I can.  I'm finding more time to carve now that I'm not teaching or remodeling houses. I love being in my studio!
